Entry description

This week on EddieStyle we are talking about the weird story behind the Flying Dutchman from Spongbob. Many people don't know, but the Flying Dutchman character along with his ghost ship is actually based on the story of the real Flying Dutchman from the Dutch Republic (Netherlands today).

Bernard Fokke was a mythical sailor from the 17th century that had the phenomenal ability to sail from Indonesia to the Dutch Republic in only 3 months when it took other experienced sailors somewhere between 6 months and a year to complete this journey. He gained enormous popularity until one day his legendary ship drowned during a storm while crossing the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, once known as "The Cape of Storms".

Since then, sailors around the world across different times said they witnessed the wrecked ship of Captain Fokke sailing aimlessly in the oceans only to disappear a few moments later. Is it just an optical illusion? Or is it actually the Flying Dutchman?
