“What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn't happen much, though.” ― J.D. Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye

Role and Impact of CBC in Canada

Canadian Broadcasting Corporation is an 82-year old broadcasting network that offers a variety of services including radio, television and internet services (Dawson 11). It stands out from other broadcasting networks because it provides a sense of Canada that is unique to its citizens.

It is worth noting that CBC receives an annual parliamentary appropriation for $1 billion worth of operating expenses, additional appropriation for capital, and hundreds of millions of dollars in indirect funding (Dawson 11).

According to Hoskins, et al., CBC broadcasts Canadian content across all genres more than do the private broadcasters (18). CBC provides the most authoritative news service in Canada, with high-budget documentaries and comedies with political satire.

CBC broadcasts important news and weather information to isolated and remote regions where private companies don’t venture due to profitability reasons. CBC North broadcasts in English, French and eight aboriginal languages. Hence, linguistic minorities receive broadcast in their native language and become a part of the unique Canadian identity (Dawson 14).

CBC broadcasts show that depict Canadian stories using Canadian actors. The comedy shows such as Schitts Creek, Kim’s Convenience, This Hour has 22 Minutes, Baroness Von Sketch Show, and Rick Mercer Report have done a good job at differentiating Canadian comedy from the usual American sitcoms. Moreover, its news is class apart from other news channels and gives a worldview of events as opposed to an American perspective (Hoskins et al. 21).

CBC broadcasts a range of content that the private broadcasters don’t. It gives a sense of belonging to Canadians, bigger than their local group identity. It helps them have an identity that is Canadian in contrast with the rest of the world.
