Backend programming languages:
PHP (one of the most popular and oldest, lots of jobs out there, lots of programmers too, used in startups and enterprise as well - open source)
Java (this is also one of the most popular, especially in the enterprise environment - open source)
ASP.NET (Microsoft's spearhead in web dev, mostly popular in enterprise environments - not open source)
Ruby on Rails (the new kid on the block framework which uses Ruby programming language, mostly used by startups - open source)
Python (one of the oldest, used in enterprise and startups as well - open source)
Coldfusion/CFML (one of the oldest and language of choice for startups 10-12 years ago because it was fast to develop into, now used mostly in the enterprise environment - not open source but has an arm, CFML, which is open source) less
